Selectmen work to promote breast cancer awareness

WEST BRIDGEWATER – Selectmen recently signed a Resolution, fittingly printed on pink paper, requesting the area’s federal legislators to support any bills that promote breast cancer awareness, provide funding for free mammogram testing for the uninsured and that invest in research to learn more about the disease.  The Resolution also dedicates October 21, 2009 as Breast Cancer Awareness Day in West Bridgewater in honor of all survivors of breast cancer, but especially to those who are affiliated with the Town either through residence or employment.

After Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Matthew P. Albanese read the Resolution at the Selectmen’s meeting of October 20, Board members offered their own comments.

“The more we can do to increase awareness and help the cause, the better,” said Selectmen Eldon F. Moreira. “I think it’s a good idea to have this Resolution and ask our leaders in Washington to work toward resolving this problem. It’s a big problem.”

“Our government has invested in research and, as a result, there has been a rise in survival rates particularly for breast cancer,” stated Albanese. “There is a need to further that research and hopefully find a cure for all cancers.”

The Resolution particularly requests passage of House Resolution 1740, dubbed The EARLY ACT.  Should this legislation be enacted, the federal government would “invest in breast cancer research, strengthen support services for those suffering from the disease and increase public awareness,” as the Resolution reads.

“Without our legislators supporting bills like this that~will fund local programs, far too many people will be left out of the early detection process,” Albanese added.

Selectmen aim to collaborate with area health facilities to educate the public on early detection and to spread the word about upcoming events.
